Understanding Registry Cleaners

This is a type of software that is a utility created mainly for Windows software. The purpose of the registry cleaner software is to remove unwanted or redundant files from the Windows registry. In recent times, the importance of cleaners has been criticized by certain experts in software, who think that these programs are not really that important.

The cleaners’ job is to basically remove all leftover tit bits from certain Windows procedures. This is more often than not configuration data. When a program is uninstalled from a computer, sometimes not all the data is removed from the system. This is the type of data that is targeted by the registry cleaners. The registry cleaner works by scanning the registry system and finding this information for deletion or repair.

One of the major reasons for the complaints of the software experts is that there are some types of malicious software that are target the registry cleaners. These include both malware and scanware.

Generally, the registry programs can effectively speed up and improve the performance of the system.

A registry database is normally huge, and the task of manually looking for corrupted files, missing files, broken or unyielding links, and invalid entries is daunting, if not impossible. This is where the cleaners come in.

If a registry cleaner makes a change in your system, then a variety of the registry cleaners can do restoration and backing up of the data that might have been lost in the process. Also, if you are the type that adds and removes programs from your computer a lot, then you probably need the registry cleaners. When a major system error occurs during a test, then there is a virtual machine that can do the restoration of your computer to the previous working state.

When errors occur in a computer system, the registry cleaners categorize them. The problem with some cleaners is the fact that they wrongly categorize these errors. It can for example label an error as “critical” without supporting proof.

Another disadvantage of registry cleaners is that they can be used by Trojans to install malware on your computer system.

There have also been claims of certain companies sending error messages to personal computers of their clients that claim that the registry is corrupted or damaged. The message also contains a link that urges the users to visit these companies’ websites where they can buy registry cleaner for usually exorbitant prices. The Microsoft Corporation recently sued these rogue companies.

Startup time on a computer can be slowed down by the size of the registry. The bigger the registry, the more the time needed for startup. The problem is mainly recognized on computers running on Windows 9x systems. Computers that run on operating systems that are NT based such as Vista and XP are not badly affected. But of late, as more and more improvements are made on Windows software, this problem is waning.

You should, however, understand that registry cleaners do not have the capability to remove viruses, spyware and adware.
